OVERVIEW OF SUPPLEMENTAL SECURITY INCOME
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a need based program. Unlike Social Security Disability Insurance, you do not need "insured status". You need never have worked at all in order to qualify potentially for SSI. In order to be entitled to these SSI payments, you must also meet two requirements. After you file your application, your local Social Security office will determine if your assets are limited enough to meet the financial requirements of the SSI program. You must also be disabled as defined under Social Security Law. The medical requirements for SSI are identical to those defined for Social Security Disability Insurance.
